On Android, read this before you install
Choose your install channel now, because you cannot change it later without erasing what is on your phone.
The Google Play build and the APK you download from this site are signed with different signing certificates. Android will not let one update the other — an install of the second over the first is refused outright. Switching channels means uninstall, then install again.
Uninstalling Relim deletes its encrypted database. Because Relim has no server-side account and no device-linking flow, that is the account on this phone. Concretely:
- With your 24-word recovery phrase you can restore your identity and your wallet on the fresh install. Your identity is derived from that phrase, so your contacts' safety numbers for you are unchanged and they still see the same person. But you will not get back your conversations, your contacts or your message history — Relim has no message-history backup yet, and each conversation has to be set up with the other person again.
- Without your recovery phrase, it is all gone permanently. There is no reset link and no support account that can recover it, by design.
So: pick one channel, and if you are unsure, write down your recovery phrase before you do anything else. It is under Settings → Backup & recovery → Show recovery phrase.
Android
Two channels, and they cannot update each other

Google Play
The easiest route, with automatic updates. Google is in the update path and, on this build, also in the notification path — see Notifications and push.
Not available yet. Relim is not on Google Play today. This page will link to it when it is.

Direct APK from this site
No Google account and no Play Services in the update path. From the first build that carries the release key, Relim asks its own relays about once a day whether a newer version exists and tells you when there is one; until then it says so on its About screen and you check this page yourself. The download and the install are both your presses either way, and Android asks you to confirm every install.
Verify what you downloaded
Do not skip this if you got the file from anywhere other than this page. Check the certificate that signed it, and — once it is listed — the file's hash:

This value stays the same for every release on this channel. If it ever changes, that is a reason to stop and ask, not to install.
The signing certificate on the Play build is a different fingerprint, and that is expected — it is the same fact this page opens with.
De-Googled Android
The direct APK is the intended route on GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, LineageOS and similar. Notifications there work through a UnifiedPush delivery app you install and choose — including one you host yourself — so neither Google nor Apple is in the path at all.
iOS
Two honest notes about the iOS build
Not available yet. Relim is not on the App Store today. This page will link to it when it is.
- iOS trails Android. Notably, hardware echo cancellation is not yet wired on iOS, so a call from an iPhone on speaker can echo for the other person. Use headphones until that is fixed.
- There is no sideloading route on iOS outside the App Store in most of the world, so if the app is removed from a regional store, that store's users stop receiving updates. This is a property of the platform, not a choice we made.
Desktop
Not released. Native Windows, macOS and Linux builds are planned after both mobile platforms; there is no web client and there will not be one, because a browser cannot keep your keys out of reach the way the native app does.
How you learn about updates
Relim has no newsletter and no mailing list, because that would mean collecting an email address. Play and the App Store update their own installs.
For the APK from this page: from the first build that carries the release key, Relim asks its own relays about once a day, while you have the app open, whether a newer version exists — and tells you on the chat list and on the About screen when there is one. Nothing downloads and nothing installs until you press, and you can turn the check off in expert mode. Until that build ships, no copy of Relim checks anything: the About screen says so in as many words, and this page is where you look. Either way you can always get the newest APK from here yourself.
